It is Holy Week. The last 7 days before the celebration of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As we approach Easter it is often the trimmings that occupy our minds, and not the great significance of the reason for our celebration, Jesus.
I too am occupied with Easter events. As a caterer I have many people to feed this week. I have been baking hundreds of squares and getting ready for the annual local Easter Egg hunt. In doing so I bought many dozen eggs and realized part way through my baking that I bought a few dozen too many. What to do with extra eggs at Easter - well colourful Easter Eggs of course.
This morning as I was planning to colour those eggs and I got thinking about the transformation of a plain white egg into a colourful Easter Egg. It is truly a simple process. A little food colouring, a little vinegar some hot water - soak the egg in it and voila, a beautifully coloured egg with a new name. Now it isn't just an egg (though it's actual nature has not really changed) it is now and Easter Egg. It has an new identity that is shown by its appearance and its bright new colour. It has become a symbol of new life by this change in its appearance.
How like the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Though we are still mortal and full of the marks of the fall of man-kind on the inside, we are never-the-less altered - transformed and full of new meaning and new life by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit marks us, just like the dye in the shell of the egg marks it. The marking is permanent. The marking of the Holy Spirit alters our purpose and is our guarantee of a promise of a new life.
What a picture. New life by the simple absorption of an outside agent which alters our state of being. Yes a little heat is required. This may not be comfortable, but the ultimate alteration is well worth the effort it takes to bring about the transformation.
So, my question for the day, what new life is obvious through my radiating of the Spirit which is within me?
