Bitter things

My 7 month old granddaughter loves lemons.  She does not pause, furrow her brow, pucker or even have excess saliva when she eats lemons.  For some reason babies like lemons without reservation.
I like some lemon as a bit of additional flavor to tea, pound cake or fish.  I have a few lovely recipes that call for lemon, it is a nice accompaniment to many things, but seldom is it the major ingredient without substantial quantities of sugar or some other agent to cut its intensity. It is too bitter and sets one's teeth on edge when on its own.
Bitter things have a way of impacting the whole body.  Eyes can water, saliva is excessively produced, sometimes shuddering occurs or goose bumps form. Likewise when we allow our hearts to become bitter, it impacts our whole body.   Our minds are transformed so that the bitterness touches many thoughts, perceptions and relationships.
The Bible says that bitterness of soul will rot your bones.  Not a very nice picture.  I have seen this, lives devastated by a refusal to let go or to grant grace.  The unfortunate thing is that when we hold bitterness it does not just impact us, it impacts all of those in our acquaintance.  It is kind of like being wet ink all the time, everything we touch becomes marred and stained by what is in our heart.
Interestingly, love is spread in the exact same way, but instead of rotting bones, love lights the heart.
I would rather mark someone with love, light and joy than darkness and rot.  How about you?
